New York ID Society: Addressing the Complexity of Diagnosing and Treating Chagas Disease
The Infectious Disease Society of New York is pleased to announce a special webinar co-sponsored by the Infectious Disease Society of New York and the CDC-funded cooperative agreement “Reducing the burden of neglected parasitic infections in the United States through evidence-based prevention and control activities” on February 9th.
Chagas' disease, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi is a lifelong infection if left untreated. An estimated 300,000 people living in the United States are currently infected, and 20 to 30% of these will develop symptomatic, potentially life-threatening Chagas' disease. Many of these infections are not recognized. Treatment with anti-trypanosomal drugs are always recommended for acute disease, reactivation, and chronic disease in children less than 18 years of age. During this lecture, Dr. Natasha Hochberg, Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine and School of Public Health, will discuss treatment, who to treat, what treatments are available, and how to manage adverse reactions. She will bring her vast experience diagnosing and treating patients with Chagas disease in Boston.
By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:
• Discuss diagnosing and screening of patients with Chagas disease.
• Describe how to establish a screening center in their institution.
• Discuss indications for treatment of Chagas and management of treatment related adverse events.
