Caryn Bern, MD, MPH
Dr. Caryn Bern is a professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. She holds an MD from Stanford University School of Medicine and an MPH from the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, and is board-certified in Internal Medicine. She was a medical epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 1990 to 2011 and worked for 15 years in the CDC Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria. Dr. Bern has worked on clinical and epidemiological aspects of Chagas disease since 2003, with projects in Peru, Bolivia, and the United States. Dr. Bern’s current research focuses on diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology, and control of Chagas disease and visceral leishmaniasis.

Jeffery Whitman, MD, MS
Dr. Jeffery Whitman is the Director of Clinical Microbiology at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at UCSF. He holds an MS in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of California, Riverside, and an MD from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and trained in Clinical Pathology at UCSF. Dr. Whitman’s research interests include improving diagnostic disparities for neglected infectious diseases with a methodological focus on mass spectrometry-based metabolomics and proteomics. His current research projects relate to improving serological diagnosis of Chagas disease and elucidating host metabolic factors promoting Trypanosoma cruzi persistence within cardiac myocytes.

Eva Clark, MD, PhD, CTropMed
Dr. Eva Clark is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Section of Infectious Diseases at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in Houston, Texas. She received MD and PhD degrees from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and trained in Internal Medicine/Pediatrics followed by Infectious Diseases at BCM. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, and holds a Certificate of Knowledge in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Travelers' Health. Dr. Clark is co-director of Medical Education at the BCM National School of Tropical Medicine and provides care for patients with tropical diseases at the Harris Health System’s Tropical Medicine clinic. Her current research interests include studying the epidemiologic, immunologic, and clinical consequences of tropical infectious diseases on the development of chronic diseases in underserved communities
