New York ID Society: Chagas Disease in the US

Chagas' disease, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi is a lifelong infection if left untreated. An estimated 300,000 people living in the United States are currently infected, and 20 to 30% of these will develop symptomatic, potentially life-threatening Chagas' disease.  Many of these infections are not recognized. Dr. Caryn Bern, Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine is recognized as an international expert on Chagas Disease.  During this session she will bring her years of experience to the IDSNY audience and give an overview of Chagas disease in the United States.
